Ryan's Open is a local golf tournament established in 2002 to raise money for two worthy projects in memory of West Genesee High School student/athlete Ryan Schoonmaker, who died August 30, 2001, in a tragic automobile accident. Proceeds form the tournament are dedicated to the Ryan Schoonmaker Memorial Scholarship at West Genesee High School, and to ongoing maintenance of a batting cage and pavilion facility for community use at Shove Park in the town of Camillus.
The Scholarship is awarded anually to a graduating West Genesee senior who is a varsity athlete in good standing, and who will enroll full-time at an accredited two- or four-year college. It recognizes graduates who have demonstrated outstanding team spirit, dedication and loyalty without regard to playing time or statistical success. The Shove Park batting cage and pavilion is being supported by the Camillus Softball & Baseball Association, of which Ryan was a member of, as well as the town of Camillus and individual contributors. Boys' and Girls' bal teams use the cage for practice, and it is housed in a 90-foot pavilion that is available for use by community groups.
The annual Ryan's Open will maintain support for these initiatives, honoring Ryan and benefiting our community. Please consider playing, sponsoring a hole or foursome, or donating a door prize.
Neophyte Josh Schoonmaker, Spring 2008, is Ryan's brother and has asked for our support for this worthy cause. Two foursomes of Gamma Nu Brothers are going to play in the tournament and the chapter is making a donation to the scholarship fund as well.
